If ever there was a book that finalized the concept of “impact versus intention,” it’s Such a Fun Age. I could leave it at that, and ask you to read just for that, and it would make a difference. But there is so much for me to unpack here. I’m acutely aware how important it is that I have read this. I’m also aware of how much of the story is beyond my reach, and probably always will be.
It beautifully illustrates that people are never just one thing. It made me see that sometimes, this happens out of necessity, and other times, willful ignorance. The character I could relate to the most (in terms of life experience) made me the most cringey. I’m not sure what that says, and it bothered me. I wondered through much of the book whether characters were more good, or more bad. Towards the end, it made me question why I couldn’t see the answer before. That bothered me me the most.
I hope you all read this. Everyone should read this. Besides its importance, it’s a beautiful, engaging, I-stayed-up-to-finish-it story with characters who will stay with you a very long time. Also I really need people to talk to about it.
